JOY

Stepped furniture piece

1990 Design: Achille Castiglioni

1990 Production: Zanotta

Joy, a larger version of Basello, extends the idea of steps rotating around a pivot like a spiral staircase, resulting in an entirely new kind of object.

The L-shaped shelves, going higher and higher, have the short end of the L attached by load bearing joints to a steel shaft (painted black) fixed to a C-shaped base. They can be opened out in a spiral or closed flat to save space (96 cm wide x 30 cm deep). This allows creating a piece of stepped furniture with 3-4-5-6-7 steps (from 74 to 190 cm) set against a wall, in a corner or in the middle of a room to have a bookcase, a step ladder, a room divider or a desk.

The shelves are made of honeycombed wood panels reinforced with an internal steel framework for stability and solidity and faced with open pore ash veneer or in natural evaporated ash (the most recent version in medium-density fibreboard painted with scratch proof enamel in a range of colours).
