The bed was designed consulting Profesor Zerbi, a famous orthopaedist who had already collaborated on a project for a hospital bed. The task was to plan an innovative system that could provide different measures without interfering with the structure. The bed was designed to render maximum ventilation of the support-mattress and a minimum transversal hammock effect. For this reason thin lengthwise slats were chosen and the materials were realized in avant-garde composites. The structural calculation for these elements and the prototype were made in the Montedison CSI lab in Milan. The resting surface became an ensemble of rectangular fibreglass slats ending in clear, soft PVC, laid out as the body lies. As there is no frame around the bed, one can change the length of the beams and the relative number of slats as desired. Thus there is great liberty of dimensions. Everything is connected to a U-shaped frame flexible enough to stretch the coarse sacking covering the head board and the footboard which then can be covered with removable cases in various colours.
