Hanging lamp
1996 Design: Achille Castiglioni
1996 Production: Flos
A suspension lamp created to solve the problem of having uniform, direct and diffused light on surfaces of various sizes.
The body of the lamp has characteristics of design and dimension such as to allow using it singly or in multiples.
Each body is composed of a cylindrical aluminium tube and a socket with the top part forming a truncated polymer cone with three plastic ring nuts to distance it from the glass.
The light source is a 40 watt bulb of the “Concentra” type with an E14 socket and is protected by a transparent hand-blown glass cone with sanded edges to shield the eyes from glare. The base of the cone has an opal glass silicone diffuser protection ring.
The cones are suspended from supply cables emerging from a special ceiling rose assembly with extruded aluminium arms and facilitate both the electrical connections and the modularity of the system. The lamp can be regulated easily, switching it on with multiple and variable functions or with a dimmer.
The choice of designing a suspension system with more than one light point is linked to chandeliers of former times and was specifically inspired by a multiple light chandelier designed by Castiglioni’s father Giannino for his own home in Lierna in the Thirties.
