Armchair

1960 Design: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

1960 1960, 1969, 1990, 2004 Production: Gavina, Knoll, Bernini, Poltrona Frau

The armchair, designed so that the different elements it is composed of were pressed, finished and then assembled, represents a very interesting study of the possibilities of having a comfortable armchair made with a rather rigid structure.

The seat, backrest and headrest, three separate points of support padded with different degrees of thickness like the two arm-rests, seem to have in addition to their constructive autonomy, a formal autonomy. So much so that the shape rather than the actual structure of this armchair suggests the idea of elasticity.

The armchair is an elegant synthesis of past shapes which reminds everyone of an armchair already possessed and already seen. It has another particular characteristic: once seated, all the parts of the body, no matter where they rest on the chair, easily adapt.

Sanluca was developed using models in clay, plaster and wood.

The result of meticulous ergonomic research, the armchair is composed of three elements (seat, backrest and headrest) with a pressed metal frame padded with polyurethane foam in various degrees of thickness and upholstered in leather. Separately manufactured and finished, the pieces are then bolted together, and the lathe-turned legs in solid rosewood inserted into the structure of the lateral armrests.
