Wall clock

1965 Design: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

1965 (1965), 1996 Production: Lorenz (prototype 1965), Alessi

Named after Florence, the city where the prototype made by Lorenz was presented in 1965 in the exhibition “La casa abitata” at the Palazzo Strozzi, the clock is a redesign of a classic wall model.

The case reduced to essentials allows maximum effect to the clock face, which comes enamelled in a number of colours. The Roman numerals make for easy reading.

Though it appears to be a simple object, the design was studied to combine technical and aesthetic excellence with low production costs.

ABS, the material used, is so flexible that it can be silk-screened in one operation. The clock laid on a working surface is flattened by being put into a vacuum; the hands (the mould was designed to take on a curved shape as they cooled) were designed in plastic and made as light as possible in order to use an ordinary quartz movement.
